- Dispose of waste according to the municipality’s rules
The exact house rules are in the rental contract.

Yes. Overnight guests are usually possible too, but should be the exception and not disturb anyone. Any rules are in the rental contract.
Moving in & documents
Which documents do I need?
Just a photo or scan of your valid ID – Swiss ID, passport or foreign residence permit.
We do not ask for a debt collection extract, proof of salary or employer confirmation. This makes it especially easy for people new to Switzerland.
Can I move in today?
That is possible if a room is free right away, the contract is signed and payment has arrived. Many properties have a key safe – so you can move in outside office hours too.
Can I register officially?
Yes. With the signed rental contract you register with the residents’ office of your municipality. The municipality will tell you the deadline and the documents required.
Which language is everything in?
We speak German and English – on the phone, by email and at the viewing.

Everyday life in Switzerland
How do I dispose of waste correctly?
In Switzerland waste is separated, and household rubbish requires official bags or stickers that you have to pay for. Your municipality decides which ones and when rubbish is collected.
Watch out: fines for incorrectly disposed waste can be high. Ask at the viewing how it works in the building.
Glass, PET bottles, cardboard and other recyclables can be dropped off for free at collection points.
How do I get to work?
Solothurn is a rail hub with connections towards Biel, Olten, Bern and Burgdorf. Regional trains and buses connect the municipalities of the region.
You can find timetables and connections on sbb.ch.
Where can I shop?
Solothurn and the surrounding municipalities have branches of the big retailers such as Migros, Coop, Denner, Aldi and Lidl.
Do I need health insurance?
Anyone living in Switzerland must generally take out compulsory health insurance within 3 months of arrival. Special rules may apply to cross-border commuters and short-term residents.
Premiums vary a lot – comparing is worthwhile, e.g. on comparis.ch.
